Off and on I´ve been working on this project for a number of years. In that time it´s gone through a number of conceptual changes - purely photography, then a mix including video but finally just video. The soundscape has also developed and has shown itself to be not only the most important but also the most difficult part of the project. It´s been quite a struggle really, and it has a large personal meaning for me - but it´s finished now - and I can move on. I only ask that you reflect on it.

The Old South Cemetery, Munich, Germany from Charles Kenwright on Vimeo.

During an outbreak of the Pest in 1563 the cemeteries became so full that it was necessary to open this cemetery outside of the city walls. It was expanded in the 1840s and became the central cemetery in Munich. It was used up to up to 1944 when burials were stopped there. It contains many notable Munich citizens including, Josef von Frauenhofer, Alois Senefelder and Georg Ohm. It is now a favourite place to walk, jog or just to relax, read the newspaper or meditate. I took a series of photographs here and put some of them together in this video. I shot it using a Nikon D300, edited the images in Capture One and cut them in Final Cut Pro.

The first in a series of videos visiting sites of industrial and urban decay. I find such places and their echoes fascinating.
